Sarens successfully executed the installation of the new bicycle and pedestrian bridge at Dikke Linde, over the A12 in Laken, Brussels. Commissioned by CSM, the project aimed to create a safer and more accessible passage for cyclists and pedestrians in the region, contributing to improved urban mobility and sustainability.

Despite the complexities of working in a highly congested urban environment with ongoing roadworks, Sarens ensured seamless planning and execution.

The lift involved a 46m-long, 9m-wide bridge weighing 120 tonnes. Initial planning foresaw the use of two 700-tonne cranes; however, the heavier-than-expected structure required an additional 200-tonne crane and a lifting triangle to optimise positioning. Once the main cranes had stabilised the load, the auxiliary crane was detached, allowing precise placement of the bridge structure.

The AC700 with guided boom, LTM 1230-5.1, and LTM 1650-8.1 cranes were deployed for the project. Mobilised from headquarters, the equipment reached the site in under 15 minutes, minimising downtime and enabling efficient setup. With road closures managed to allow staggered transport entries, Sarens ensured equipment installation and readiness by midday. By 13:00, the lifting operation was underway, executed flawlessly within the planned schedule.

Operating within a confined job site bordered by trees and heavy traffic, the Sarens team showcased agility and expertise. Around ten crew members coordinated the lift, delivering precision in every stage of the operation. The successful completion drew significant public interest and included an official visit by the Minister of Mobility, highlighting the project’s importance for Brussels’ transport infrastructure.

The installation of the Dikke Linde bridge depicts Sarens’ ability to deliver complex infrastructure projects in urban environments. More than an engineering achievement, this project enhances community connectivity, ensuring a safer, greener, and more sustainable future for Brussels.
