The ambitious redevelopment of Place Sainctelette in Brussels is set to transform the area by improving road safety, easing mobility, and creating new cultural and green spaces. The project, led by Brussels Mobility, will introduce safer pedestrian crossings, cycle lanes, and enhanced public transport connections, helping to reduce traffic risks and reconnect the city centre with the municipality of Molenbeek-Saint-Jean.

One of the cornerstone elements of the redevelopment is a new pedestrian and cycle bridge, designed to stand alongside the existing Sainctelette and De Trooz bridges. Made of prefabricated steel, the 37-metre-long, 110-tonne structure provides a safe crossing for pedestrians and cyclists while avoiding disruption to road traffic.

Sarens was entrusted by client Emotec with the assembly, transport, and installation of the bridge. The operation required several phases: first, the structure was assembled in Geel with the help of Sarens’ LTM1070-4.2 and LTM1110-5.1 cranes. It was then loaded onto a barge operated by HEBO Pontoon and transported via the Albert Canal and the Scheldt to its final location. For the final installation, Sarens deployed an LTM1650-8.1 and an AC700, carefully positioning them in a confined urban environment with steep gradients. Thanks to detailed planning and close collaboration with Emotec, the bridge was successfully installed on September 13th.

In the next phase, prefabricated slabs, reinforcements, and concrete filling will be added, with completion expected by December. Once open, the new bridge will significantly improve mobility and safety in the area, while contributing to Brussels’ cultural and environmental landscape with more accessible public spaces and green areas.

This project underscores Sarens’ leading role in bridge construction and installation worldwide. From the historic Colbert Bridge in Dieppe, France, to the 5,850-tonne OA14 bridge in Luxembourg and the 8,400-tonne railway bridge on Amsterdam’s A1, Sarens continues to deliver complex infrastructure projects that connect communities and enhance mobility.
